A haunting slice of Dutch folk horror is on the way, and the new trailer for Heresy (also known as Witte Wieven) is dripping with The Witch-style dread.
The film will begin streaming exclusively on Shudder on May 1.
Set in a medieval village in the Netherlands, Heresy follows a young woman torn between her faith, a deeply paranoid community, and something far more sinister hiding in the surrounding woods. As fear spreads among the townspeople, the line between religious devotion and hysteria begins to collapse—opening the door to ancient forces that refuse to stay buried.
The film marks the feature debut of Didier Konings, whose background includes concept art work on Stranger Things, Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, along with visual effects credits on The Conjuring 2 and Lights Out.
Starring Anneke Sluiters, Len Leo Vincent, Reinout Bussemaker, Léon van Waas, and Nola Elvis Kemper, the film is written by Marc S. Nollkaemper and produced by Make Way Film and VPRO.
Heresy made its world premiere at the International Film Festival Rotterdam before hitting major genre festivals including Fantastic Fest, Sitges Film Festival, Screamfest Horror Film Festival, and Grimmfest—building buzz as a slow-burn nightmare rooted in folklore and faith.
Heresy arrives this May—and it looks like it’s bringing something ancient with it.
