The final girls are getting back together—and this time, they’re being hunted.

Paramount Pictures is moving forward with a feature-film adaptation of Grady Hendrix’s bestselling slasher novel The Final Girl Support Group, and the project has found its director in Christopher Landon, the filmmaker behind Happy Death Day and Drop.

Landon previously collaborated with Paramount on My Best Friend’s Exorcism, another adaptation of Hendrix’s work.

Published in 2021, The Final Girl Support Group takes the familiar slasher trope of the “final girl” and turns it into a terrifying psychological nightmare.

The story follows Lynette, a woman who survived a brutal massacre. For more than a decade, she has met regularly with five other survivors and their therapist as they attempt to rebuild their lives after surviving horrific attacks.

Then one of the women misses a meeting.

What follows is every final girl’s worst nightmare: someone knows about the support group, and they are determined to find the survivors and tear their lives apart all over again.

But these women have survived before.

And no matter how impossible the odds become, how dark the night gets, or how close the killer comes, final girls don’t give up easily.

Hendrix’s novel has earned praise for putting its characters through an especially brutal and bloody survival story, blending slasher conventions with psychological horror and breakneck pacing.

The movie adaptation has already gone through several iterations. Five years ago, Andy Muschietti and Barbara Muschietti, the producers behind Mama, It, and It Chapter Two, were attached to develop The Final Girl Support Group as a series for HBO Max, with Charlize Theron also attached as a producer at the time.

Theron is no longer involved, but the Muschiettis remain attached to the project through their Double Dream production label.

Paramount is also developing another adaptation of Hendrix’s work, with his sci-fi novella BadAsstronauts also in development.

With Landon now behind the camera, The Final Girl Support Group could be gearing up to deliver a very different kind of slasher—one where surviving the killer was only the beginning.
