The Horror Beneath the Waves Emerges in Netflix’s ‘Below’ First Look
Netflix has unveiled the first look at ‘Below’, a new sea creature horror series from creator Jesse McKeown (The Umbrella Academy), arriving on the streamer this October.
Josh Hartnett leads the cast of the six-episode limited series alongside Charlie Heaton, Mackenzie Davis, Rohan Campbell, Ruby Stokes, Kaleb Horn, and Willow Kean.
Set in a remote Newfoundland town, Below follows a hardened fisherman who must protect his family and community when a mysterious creature from the depths begins terrorizing the area.
The story centers on Calvin (Josh Hartnett), who teams up with marine researcher Fonda (Mackenzie Davis) to uncover the truth behind the terrifying entity hiding beneath the ocean. Their investigation also leads them toward the island’s forgotten history and the strange events that have haunted the region for generations.
McKeown explains that the series draws inspiration from the real-life hardships faced by communities living in isolated coastal environments.
“Folks here have been dealing with unexplained phenomena and tragic events for hundreds of years,” McKeown says, pointing to devastating storms, maritime disasters, economic collapse, and harsh winters as part of the area’s long history of survival.
The creator also cites legendary filmmakers Steven Spielberg and John Carpenter as major influences, promising a blend of suspense, creature horror, and atmospheric terror.
While Below shares some DNA with classic ocean horror, the series appears to lean into a darker and more serious tone, bringing a terrifying mystery to the cold waters of Newfoundland.
‘Below’ premieres October 8, 2026, exclusively on Netflix.
