Netflix is going back into the world of true crime this September with the fourth season of its hit anthology series Monster.
Titled Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the new season puts the infamous Lizzie Borden murders at the center of the story, while also bringing several other notorious women from history into the mix. Netflix has now released the official trailer ahead of the season’s September 17 premiere.
Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan’s anthology series takes a different approach to the Borden case, focusing not only on the gruesome murders themselves but also on the relationship between Lizzie Borden and her rebellious maid, Bridget Sullivan.
The official synopsis reads:
“When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge.”
The murders that follow will shock the world and help transform Lizzie Borden into one of the most infamous figures in American true crime history.
Ella Beatty stars as Lizzie Borden, with Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Barden also appearing.
But the new season isn’t limiting itself to the Borden case.
Sarah Paulson takes on the role of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos, who was previously portrayed by Charlize Theron in the 2003 film Monster. Meanwhile, Vicky Krieps plays Countess Elizabeth Báthory, the infamous Hungarian noblewoman whose legend has long been connected to the Dracula myth.
Murphy has previously teased the unusual direction of the new season, explaining that he has wanted to explore the stories of both Wuornos and Báthory for years.
“It is an interesting season because it is the Lizzie Borden story, but there are also other female ‘killers’ who I was always interested in exploring,” Murphy said.
The creator says the season is ultimately about more than the crimes themselves, examining the circumstances and motivations behind the women who became infamous for them.
“So we are kind of doing this fantasia of women vs. the system,” Murphy explained. “It’s not what they did, it’s the question of: What made them do it? Why did they do it, if they did it?”
The eight-episode season is directed by Max Winkler and Sarah Adina Smith, with Ian Brennan writing the series.
Monster premiered on Netflix in 2022 with Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story, followed by The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and The Ed Gein Story.
Now, the anthology is turning its attention to one of America’s most infamous murder cases.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story premieres September 17 on Netflix.
