On January 15, 2023, a short domestic flight in Nepal turned into one of the country’s deadliest aviation tragedies in recent years.

Among the passengers on Yeti Airlines Flight 691 was Sonu Jaiswal, a traveler who, like many others nearing the end of a flight, decided to take out his phone and record the view outside his window.

What he thought would be a simple landing video ended up becoming something far more disturbing.

A Routine Descent That Felt Completely Normal

As the aircraft approached Pokhara, everything appeared to be going as expected. The weather was clear, visibility was good, and there were no obvious signs that anything was wrong.

Inside the cabin, passengers seemed calm. There was no panic, no sudden movement, nothing to suggest that the flight was anything other than routine.

According to reports, the pilots may have unintentionally moved the propeller control levers into what is known as a “feathered” position. This setting is typically used when an engine fails, as it reduces drag by aligning the propeller blades with the airflow.

However, activating this setting during a normal landing has the opposite effect of what’s needed. It effectively removes thrust from the engines. With both engines losing power at a low altitude, the aircraft no longer had the ability to maintain lift or recover from the descent.

At that point, there was simply not enough time or height to correct the mistake.
