A new nightmare is taking shape in the isolated wilderness of upstate New York.

Emily Bennett and Justin Brooks, the married writing and directing team behind the pandemic-era horror film Alone With You, are returning with their latest descent into darkness, Blood Shine.

Dark Sky Films will release the folk horror film in theaters, on VOD, and across digital platforms on August 21.

The film follows Clara, a deeply religious zealot who worships light through isolated and increasingly disturbing rituals. Her strange world collides with that of Brighton West, a troubled horror filmmaker who heads into upstate New York to finish the screenplay for his next movie.

A chance encounter between the two quickly spirals into a surreal and hallucinatory nightmare filled with religious devotion, violence, flesh, and unsettling visions.

Bennett stars as Clara while also co-writing and co-directing the film alongside Brooks.

The cast also includes Brendan Sexton III (Session 9), David Call (Insidious: The Red Door), Larry Fessenden (You’re Next), and Toby Poser (Recluse, Hellbender).

“Blood Shine” was described by Dark Sky Films executive vice president Greg Newman as a daring and visually striking take on folk horror, praising Bennett and Brooks for pushing the genre into new territory.

The film is produced by Aaron B. Koontz through Paper Street Pictures, the production company behind Shelby Oaks and Scare Package, alongside Alexander Schepsman, Garrett Fennelly, and Zeus Kontoyannis through Zeus Pictures.

Ashleigh Snead and Cameron Burns serve as co-producers for Paper Street, while Michael McFadden, G. Riley Mills, and Matt Sullivan executive produce.

The newly released trailer offers a first glimpse at the film’s unsettling world, including a particularly eerie performance from Larry Fessenden as a seemingly devout religious figure hiding a much darker and more sadistic side.

Blood Shine arrives August 21.
