HBO’s ‘Crystal Lake’ Brings the Birth of a Horror Icon to Life in New First Look
The legend of Jason Voorhees begins with his mother.
Crystal Lake is putting the spotlight on Pamela Voorhees, and the first teaser and images from Entertainment Weekly offer a first glimpse at the origins of one of horror’s most infamous families.
The eight-episode series will premiere on Peacock on October 15, bringing fans back to the world of Friday the 13th for the first official new entry since the 2009 remake.
Crystal Lake will explore the events surrounding Jason Voorhees’ infamous drowning and follow Pamela’s tragic transformation from a grieving mother into a killer consumed by revenge.
The series begins “with the circumstances around that drowning and follows from there Pam’s descent into madness.”
Brad Caleb Kane (IT: Welcome to Derry) serves as showrunner and describes Crystal Lake as a “mixtape of genre,” blending different storytelling styles while keeping the series firmly rooted in slasher territory.
“Everybody in this world is living in a different genre in their mind, until they collide with the genre that Pam is in,” Kane explained, while confirming the series is “100 percent” still a slasher.
Set during the 1970s, the series stars Linda Cardellini as Pamela Voorhees — a mother who abandons her dreams of a singing career to raise her son, only to spiral into darkness after losing Jason.
Callum Vinson (Chucky) portrays young Jason Voorhees as the series explores the early history of the masked killer who would eventually terrorize Crystal Lake for decades.
The cast also includes William Catlett (Abigail), Cameron Scoggins (Nashville), Devin Kessler (Godfather of Harlem), Gwendolyn Sundstrom, Nick Cordileone (Warrior), Joy Suprano (Fleishman Is in Trouble), Danielle Kotch (Sinister), Christopher Denham (Shining Girls), Nancy Nagrant (The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel), and Phoenix Parnevik.
The series will feature episodes directed by Michael Lennox (Derry Girls), Celine Held and Logan George (Caddo Lake), and Quyen Tran (The Pitt).
Produced by A24 for Peacock, Crystal Lake marks the long-awaited return of the Friday the 13th franchise — and the first official installment since the 2009 remake.
Before Jason became a horror icon, there was Pamela Voorhees. Crystal Lake will finally tell her story.
