After years of development hell, Nick Cutter’s disturbing horror novel The Troop is finally moving closer to the big screen.

Deadline reports that Paramount Primal has acquired the film rights to Cutter’s 2014 novel, with Chris Basler (Onslaught) attached to write the screenplay. Lyrical Media will produce the upcoming adaptation.

The story follows a group of boys on their annual scout camping trip who encounter a mysterious intruder. What begins as an unexpected interruption quickly turns into a nightmare when the stranger unleashes something far more terrifying than any campfire ghost story.

As a terrifying infection spreads through the group, the boys are forced into a brutal fight for survival—one that pits them against the infected and, eventually, each other.

Cutter’s novel has been in the adaptation pipeline for years, with the author previously revealing that the project had gone through numerous versions and filmmakers.

At the time, Cutter confirmed that the project was in the hands of Lyrical Media, which had a script they were happy with. Now, just a few months later, The Troop has taken another major step toward becoming a reality.

For fans of Cutter’s particularly nasty brand of body horror, the prospect of seeing The Troop unleashed on the big screen is certainly worth watching.
