Lizzie Borden is picking up the axe.

Netflix’s hit true-crime anthology Monster returns this September with Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, and the first teaser introduces the infamous killer with a chilling twist on the childhood rhyme associated with her gruesome legend.

Created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, the anthology series returns for its fourth season on September 17.

This time, the series turns its attention to one of America’s most notorious unsolved murder cases.

Netflix describes the new season:

“When the repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her rebellious maid find themselves trapped in a house built on humiliation and cruelty, they escape into a fantasy of sex, power, and revenge.”

What follows is a bloody crime that shocks the world and transforms Lizzie Borden into an enduring icon.

“The gruesome unsolved murders that follow don’t just shock the world—they give birth to an icon who refuses to live imprisoned in a cage, choosing instead to forge her own legend: shocking, monstrous, and gloriously free.”

Ella Beatty stars as Lizzie Borden, with Vicky Krieps, Charlie Hunnam, Rebecca Hall, Billie Lourd, Joey Pollari, Sarah Paulson, and Jessica Barden also starring.

The eight-episode season is directed by Max Winkler (Episodes 401, 402, 403, 405, 407, and 408) and Sarah Adina Smith (Episodes 404 and 406), with Ian Brennan writing the season.

The True Story Behind Lizzie Borden

In 1892, Lizzie Borden was accused of murdering her father, Andrew Borden, and her stepmother, Abby Borden, with an axe inside their home in Fall River, Massachusetts.

Although Borden was ultimately acquitted, the brutal case has remained one of America’s most infamous unsolved mysteries and has inspired countless movies and television projects.

Earlier this year, the indie horror movie The Lizzie Borden Game also brought the infamous axe murderer back into the horror spotlight, while Christina Ricci previously portrayed Borden in Lifetime’s The Lizzie Borden Chronicles.

But Lizzie isn’t the only notorious killer lurking in the new season of Monster.

The teaser also offers quick glimpses at Aileen Wuornos and Elizabeth Báthory, suggesting that the anthology could be setting up a much larger exploration of infamous female killers.

Monster debuted in 2022 with The Jeffrey Dahmer Story before moving on to The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story and The Ed Gein Story.

Now, one of America’s most infamous axe murder cases gets the Monster treatment.

Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story premieres September 17 on Netflix.
