Parker Finn is bringing one of horror’s most unhinged relationship nightmares back from the dead.

The Smile and Smile 2 filmmaker is writing, directing, and producing a new take on Andrzej Żuławski’s infamous Possession, and Paramount has now set a surprisingly early theatrical release date.

Possession will hit theaters on June 11, 2027.

The original 1981 film starred Isabelle Adjani and Sam Neill as Anna and Mark, a married couple living in Cold War-era West Berlin whose relationship begins collapsing into something far more horrifying than a simple affair.

What starts with suspicions of infidelity soon spirals into a surreal supernatural nightmare involving obsession, betrayal, violence, and something monstrous lurking beneath the surface.

For the remake, Margaret Qualley and Callum Turner take over the central roles.

The cast also includes Madeline Brewer (Cam, You), Emory Cohen (Sweetheart, Lords of Chaos), Nicholas Alexander Chavez (Grotesquerie), Diego Calva (Her Private Hell), and Paul Dano (The Batman).

A Daunting Horror Classic to Remake

Żuławski’s Possession has become one of the most revered and disturbing psychological horror films of its era, making Finn’s decision to revisit it a particularly ambitious one.

Adjani, who delivered the film’s legendary performance as Anna, has previously given her blessing to the remake — including Qualley taking on the role.

The new film is produced by Jonathan Fass, Roy Lee, Andrew Childs, and Robert Pattinson, with Marc Bienstock serving as executive producer.

The original Possession remains notoriously difficult to define. It blends psychological horror, body horror, supernatural terror, and deeply uncomfortable marital drama into something that feels almost impossible to replicate.

As Brian Keiper wrote for the film’s 40th anniversary, few movies capture emotional turmoil with the same intensity as Żuławski’s Possession. Beneath its madness is a story about loss — including the collapse of political ideals, faith, innocence, and, most painfully, a marriage.

That makes Finn’s remake a fascinating prospect.

The filmmaker has already demonstrated his ability to turn seemingly simple psychological concepts into nightmarish horror with Smile and Smile 2. Now he has one of horror’s most notoriously chaotic films as his source material.

And Paramount isn’t exactly burying it.

The June 11, 2027 release date puts Possession directly against How to Train Your Dragon 2 and one week after JT Mollner’s creature feature Skeletons.

Whether Finn can capture even a fraction of the madness that made Żuławski’s original so unforgettable remains to be seen.
