There is no safety—and very little truth—in sight in the first teaser for Verity, the upcoming psychological thriller starring Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson.

Based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 bestseller, the film is set to hit theaters and premium formats on October 2 via Amazon MGM Studios.

Verity follows struggling writer Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), who is hired to complete the remaining books in a successful series after acclaimed author Verity Crawford (Hathaway) is left incapacitated. Lowen travels to the remote Crawford estate to sort through Verity’s unfinished work, but what she finds inside quickly shifts the assignment into something far more disturbing.

As she digs deeper, Lowen discovers a set of autobiographical writings that appear to reveal Verity’s most intimate—and unsettling—confessions. The lines between truth and fiction begin to collapse as Lowen becomes increasingly entangled in a web of manipulation, obsession, and psychological distortion tied to Verity’s marriage.

The cast also includes Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Córdova, and Brady Wagner.

The film is directed by Michael Showalter (The Big Sick, The Idea of You) from a screenplay by Nick Antosca (Hannibal, Antlers).

Producers include Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, Antosca and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat, Anne Hathaway for Somewhere Pictures, Colleen Hoover for Heartbones Entertainment, and Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny. Dakota Johnson serves as executive producer alongside Kerry Orent and Lauren Levine.
