Paco Plaza, known for co-directing the acclaimed “[REC]” series, is bringing us a prequel to his chilling film “Veronica” titled “Sister Death” (also known as “Hermana Muerte”). Netflix has dropped a tantalizing hint that we can anticipate this spooky prequel to grace our screens sometime in October.

While an exact release date remains under wraps for now, it’s worth keeping an eye out for “Sister Death” as it’s set to make its world premiere at the Sitges Film Festival. The festival is scheduled to kick off on October 5 and run until October 15, 2023, with “Sister Death” taking the prestigious opening feature slot.

Notably, the film was predominantly shot within the historical Royal Monastery of San Jerónimo de Cotalba, adding an extra layer of atmosphere to its eerie narrative.

In “Sister Death,” we find ourselves in post-war Spain, where a young novice named Narcisa, portrayed by Aria Bedmar, arrives at a former convent-turned-school for girls to assume the role of a teacher. However, as time passes, Narcisa becomes ensnared in a series of inexplicable events and increasingly unsettling situations that plague her. These disturbances eventually lead her on a harrowing journey to uncover the dark secrets shrouding the convent and tormenting its inhabitants.

The prequel, “Sister Death,” will center around the character Hermana Muerte, previously played by Consuelo Trujillo in “Veronica.” The cast also includes Almudena Amor, Luisa Merelas, Chelo Vivares, and Maru Valdivielso.

For those unfamiliar with “Veronica,” it tells the story of a young woman who must protect her younger siblings after attempting to communicate with their deceased father through a Ouija board, unleashing a terrifying series of events. The film draws inspiration from the real-life case of Estefania Gutierrez Lazaro, a Spanish teenager who died mysteriously in 1992 following a Ouija board session. “Veronica” is currently available for streaming on Netflix.

Jorge Guerricaechevarria has penned the script for this new prequel.

Netflix has yet to unveil its Halloween lineup for the year, but it’s a safe bet that “Sister Death” will receive a concrete release date once the streaming giant shares its spooky plans. Stay tuned for more spine-tingling updates!
