‘Ma 2’ Still in the Works as Producers Promise a Strong Script

It’s been seven years since Blumhouse’s cult horror hit Ma introduced audiences to the unforgettable Sue Ann, and the long-awaited sequel is still moving forward.

Speaking with Entertainment Tonight, Octavia Spencer offered a promising update on Ma 2, revealing that the team is focused on making sure the sequel lives up to the original.

“We are working hard on getting a great script out. Blumhouse is the best at what they do. It’s going to be chock-full of surprises,” Spencer said.

The sequel was officially announced last year, with Emmy-winning writer Ashley Nicole Black (Shrinking, Ted Lasso) attached to pen the screenplay.

When the project was first revealed, Blumhouse founder and CEO Jason Blum celebrated the return of the fan-favorite character.

“Ma has proven to be a social phenomenon since its release, with fans embracing both the film and Octavia’s unforgettable performance. Ma likes to say, ‘Don’t make me drink alone,’ so we’re thrilled Octavia will be back for another round.”

Released in 2019, Ma follows Sue Ann, a lonely woman in a small Ohio town who befriends a group of local teenagers after agreeing to buy them alcohol. What begins as an unlikely friendship quickly spirals into a disturbing nightmare as Sue Ann’s true intentions are revealed.

The original film was directed by Tate Taylor from a screenplay by Scotty Landes. Taylor previously explained that Sue Ann’s fate was intentionally left ambiguous, allowing the door to remain open for a sequel.

Made on a modest budget, Ma went on to earn more than $60 million worldwide while becoming an unexpected pop culture sensation. Sue Ann’s bizarre behavior and memorable one-liners also fueled countless memes across social media, helping the film develop a devoted cult following.

No release date or director has been announced for Ma 2, but with Spencer confirming that work on the screenplay is well underway, fans can expect more updates as development continues.
