The collaboration between “American Horror Story” creator Ryan Murphy and actress Sarah Paulson extended to the 2020 Netflix series “Ratched,” an 8-episode exploration of the origin story of Nurse Mildred Ratched, the iconic villain from One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest. The series aimed to introduce audiences to the woman before the monster, with initial plans for a two-season storyline.

However, recent developments have altered these plans. As reported by Deadline, Sarah Paulson has officially confirmed that Netflix’s “Ratched” will not be returning for a second season.

Initially ordered in 2017, the show’s first season, currently available on Netflix, unfolds in 1947 as Mildred seeks employment at a prominent psychiatric hospital engaged in unsettling experiments on the human mind. Under the guise of a dedicated nurse, Mildred infiltrates the mental health care system, revealing a growing darkness beneath her stylish exterior. The narrative emphasizes the idea that true monsters are created rather than born.

Starring Sarah Paulson as Mildred Ratched, the ensemble cast includes Cynthia Nixon, Judy Davis, Sharon Stone, Jon Jon Briones, Finn Wittrock, Charlie Carver, Alice Englert, Amanda Plummer, Corey Stoll, Sophie Okonedo, and Vincent D’Onofrio, portraying various characters within the complex storyline.

“Ratched” is helmed by executive producers Ryan Murphy, Ian Brennan, Sarah Paulson, Alexis Martin Woodall, Aleen Keshishian, Jacob Epstein, Jennifer Salt, Margaret Riley, Michael Douglas, Robert Mitas, and Tim Minear. The series was created by Evan Romansky.
