Sophie Thatcher Joins New Sci-Fi Horror Film from ‘The Babadook’ Director Jennifer Kent
Director Jennifer Kent is officially returning with a new feature film, and this time she’s stepping into dystopian sci-fi territory.
According to reports, Kent’s next project will be The Girl Who Was Plugged In, an adaptation of James Tiptree Jr.’s influential 1973 novella. Rising horror star Sophie Thatcher has signed on to lead the film in dual roles.

The synthetic body, grown in a lab, is designed to become a celebrity influencer capable of manipulating consumers and selling products to the masses.
As Delphi’s popularity explodes, Burke becomes psychologically consumed by the identity she controls, spiraling into obsession, emotional collapse, and what’s being described as a terrifying form of “tech psychosis.”
Jennifer Kent is writing and directing the adaptation herself. The filmmaker previously earned critical acclaim for alongside The Babadook, establishing her reputation for emotionally brutal and deeply unsettling storytelling.
Kent said the themes of the story feel more relevant now than ever before.
“Even though the original story was published over 50 years ago, its themes are now landing with a searing relevance,” Kent explained.
Production on The Girl Who Was Plugged In is expected to begin this November in Australia. International sales will launch at the Cannes Film Market next week.
Sophie Thatcher continues to become one of horror’s fastest rising stars. Alongside the final season of “Yellowjackets,” she’s also attached to Nicolas Winding Refn’s upcoming film Her Private Hell and the witch hunt thriller Cavendish.
