First Look: Sophie Thatcher in Nicolas Winding Refn’s ‘Her Private Hell’
A suffocating nightmare is heading to the Cannes Film Festival as Nicolas Winding Refn prepares to unveil his latest descent into psychological terror, Her Private Hell.
To mark the announcement, the first official look at Sophie Thatcher (Yellowjackets) has been revealed—offering a glimpse into a film that promises beauty, dread, and something far more disturbing beneath the surface.
Shot in Tokyo, the thriller follows a woman on a desperate search for her missing father as a strange, creeping mist consumes the city. But this isn’t just atmosphere—it brings with it something unseen, something lethal. A presence that doesn’t just stalk… it waits.
Joining Thatcher is a stacked cast including Charles Melton (Riverdale), Kristine Froseth (How to Blow Up a Pipeline), and Havana Rose Liu (No Exit). They’re backed by Dougray Scott (Hitman), Diego Calva (Babylon), Aoi Yamada (Perfect Days), Shioli Kutsuna (Deadpool & Wolverine), and Hidetoshi Nishijima (Shin Ultraman).
Refn directs from a script co-written with Esti Giordani (Vida), while legendary composer Pino Donaggio (Carrie, Don’t Look Now) brings the score to life—hinting at a soundscape as haunting as the visuals.
Produced under Refn’s byNWR Originals banner, Her Private Hell is expected to arrive later this year via Neon.
And Refn isn’t slowing down—he’s already attached to the long-awaited Maniac Cop remake, which is eyeing a fall production start.
If this first look is anything to go by, Her Private Hell won’t just blur the line between reality and nightmare…
It’ll erase it completely.
