Melissa Barrera Finally Speaks Out About Her ‘Scream 7’ Exit Three Years Later

Three years after being removed from Scream , Melissa Barrera is finally speaking openly about the controversy that changed the direction of the franchise.

In a new interview with Variety, the actress addressed her firing from the Scream series following social media posts she made in late 2023 regarding the war in Gaza. At the time, Barrera publicly criticized the Israeli government’s actions against Palestinian civilians and shared posts from humanitarian organizations and scholars discussing the conflict.

The backlash quickly exploded online, and production company Spyglass ultimately cut ties with the actress, effectively ending the franchise’s original plans for a new trilogy centered around Barrera and Jenna Ortega’s characters.

Following Barrera’s exit — and Ortega later leaving the project as well — the studio shifted focus back to Sidney Prescott, bringing back Neve Campbell and several returning cast members for .

During the interview, Barrera didn’t hold back when discussing the final version of the film and the studio’s handling of the situation.

“The only way they were able to make that movie after what happened was to nostalgia-bait as much as possible,” Barrera said.

She also questioned the film’s reported box office success. While official numbers claim the movie earned over $200 million worldwide, Barrera suggested she doesn’t believe those totals are accurate.

Despite the fallout, Barrera explained that her experience working on the franchise itself hasn’t been ruined for her.

“The reality is that Scream is always going to be a big part of me,” she said, specifically thanking directors Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett for casting her in the previous films.

The actress also spoke about the emotional impact of being publicly punished for speaking out on issues she believed in.

“When you’re doing something that feels like it’s the right thing to do, and then you’re punished for it, it really messes with your head,” Barrera explained.

The controversy surrounding Barrera’s removal remains one of the most divisive moments in modern horror fandom, with debates over free speech, politics, and studio control continuing years later.
