Guillermo del Toro is bringing his vision of Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein to Netflix with a star-studded ensemble cast. It has been confirmed that Christoph Waltz, known for his roles in “Inglorious Basterds” and “Alita: Battle Angel,” has joined the project.

Del Toro himself announced this casting news at the 10th-anniversary screening of “Pacific Rim,” revealing, “I’m doing Frankenstein. We’re working on it. We start shooting in February, and it’s a movie I have been wanting to do for 50 years since I saw the first Frankenstein. I had an epiphany, and it’s basically a movie that required a lot of growth and a lot of tools that I couldn’t have done 10 years ago. Now I’m brave or crazy enough or something, and we’re gonna tackle it. It’s Oscar Isaac, Andrew Garfield, Christoph Waltz, Mia Goth, and we’re working on it.”

Guillermo del Toro will also reunite with renowned composer Alexandre Desplat for the score and produce alongside his frequent collaborator Gary Ungar. With the cast and crew in place, filming for this highly-anticipated project is set to commence in February.

Earlier in March, there were rumors that Mia Goth, Oscar Isaac, and Andrew Garfield had joined the project, though Netflix did not officially confirm these casting choices. Del Toro and Waltz had previously collaborated on the stop-motion adaptation of “Pinocchio,” with Waltz voicing the character Count Volupe.

Del Toro is both writing and directing ‘Frankenstein’ for Netflix, and the specific approach he’ll take with the iconic tale remains under wraps.

Guillermo del Toro, who won four Academy Awards for “The Shape of Water” in 2018, is known for putting his unique spin on classic monsters. With “Frankenstein” next on his list, he’s adding yet another iconic Universal Monster to his cinematic universe. Stay tuned for further updates on this exciting project.
