‘The Blair Witch Project’ Creators & Original Cast Return to Executive Produce New Reboot

The woods are calling again… and the people who started it all are coming back.

The team behind The Blair Witch Project is officially reuniting for a new reboot at Lionsgate—and this time, they’re not just watching from the sidelines.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, original stars Joshua Leonard and Michael C. Williams will executive produce alongside creators Eduardo Sánchez and Daniel Myrick, plus producer Gregg Hale. It marks the first time the core team has been this directly involved in shaping a new Blair Witch film.

Director Dylan Clark (Portrait of God) is set to helm the project, working from a rewritten script originally penned by Chris Devlin. Story details are locked deep in the woods for now, but production is targeting a fall shoot with a reported budget around $10 million.

The return of Leonard and Williams carries extra weight. Both actors—along with co-star Heather Donahue—have openly criticized the lack of residuals from the original film, despite its massive success. Their involvement now suggests a different kind of stake in the franchise moving forward.

While Sánchez and Myrick were credited on past entries like Book of Shadows: Blair Witch 2 and Blair Witch, they had little creative input—something this reboot appears to be correcting.

Behind the scenes, horror heavyweights are stacking the production. Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions and James Wan of Atomic Monster are producing alongside Roy Lee, with Divide/Conquer’s Adam Hendricks and Greg Gilreath also on board. Additional executive producers include Steven Schneider, Michael Clear, and Judson Scott.

The project will head to the Cannes Film Market for international sales, with Lionsgate expected to handle distribution in North America and the UK.

Released in 1999, The Blair Witch Project changed horror forever. Made for just $60,000, the found footage nightmare followed three student filmmakers who disappeared in the Maryland woods while investigating a local legend—leaving behind only their footage. It went on to gross nearly $250 million worldwide and became one of the most influential horror films ever made.

Now, with the original voices finally back in control, this reboot has a chance to drag the legend somewhere darker than ever.
