The T-Virus is back—and this time, survival horror is moving at full speed.

Sony has released the official trailer for Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil, offering our best look yet at the upcoming big-screen adaptation inspired by Capcom’s legendary video game franchise.

Starring Austin Abrams (Weapons) as Bryan, the film follows a medical courier who becomes trapped in a horrifying night of chaos after an outbreak sends the world around him spiraling into madness.

What follows is a relentless fight for survival filled with biological horror, mutated creatures, and plenty of familiar Resident Evil touches—including the iconic shotgun shells spotted in the trailer.

Resident Evil hits theaters and IMAX on September 18 from Sony Pictures.

Cregger (Weapons, Barbarian) directs from a screenplay he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, John Wick: Chapter 4).

While the trailer hints at the franchise’s classic zombie horror, Cregger has made it clear that this new Resident Evil is not simply another zombie movie.

The director previously explained that the film focuses much more heavily on the bizarre and horrifying mutations caused by the T-Virus.

“This movie doesn’t utilize zombies that much,” Cregger teased. “It’s much more focused on the weird creature stuff than the zombies.”

According to Cregger, only two or three scenes feature traditional zombie action—with most of that footage already appearing in the trailer.

Instead, the filmmaker wanted to explore what the T-Virus can do to the human body and the world around it.

“I just feel like, you have this opportunity for the T-Virus to do all these really fascinating things to the human body, and to the world around you, and so to just limit it to zombies feels like a squandered opportunity,” Cregger said. “So I tried to really vary it up.”

That could mean audiences are in for a much stranger—and potentially far more disturbing—kind of Resident Evil movie.

The film is reportedly clocking in at just 95 minutes, according to its listing on the AMC Theatres website, making it one of the shortest entries in the franchise.

That runtime suggests Cregger’s Resident Evil may waste very little time before throwing audiences directly into the nightmare.
