Austin Abrams Is Swallowed Whole in the First Trailer for ‘Whalefall’
The odds of being swallowed alive by a whale aren’t zero—and Whalefall is banking on that terrifying possibility.
The upcoming survival horror thriller has just dropped its first teaser, and it’s as claustrophobic and nightmarish as it sounds: a man, a massive sperm whale, and no way out.
Whalefall hits theaters October 16.
The teaser shows exactly what makes the premise so disturbing—one moment a dive, the next a violent descent into darkness as a man is pulled inside a living giant and forced to fight for survival in impossible conditions. It’s survival horror taken to its most extreme, most suffocating limit.
Following the death of his father (Josh Brolin), Jay Gardiner (Austin Abrams) heads off the central coast of California, diving into the ocean in search of closure. Instead, he finds something far worse: he’s swallowed whole by a sperm whale.
Trapped inside the creature’s stomach with just one hour of oxygen remaining, Jay is forced to confront both the brutal reality of his situation and the lessons his father left behind—lessons that may be his only chance at escape.
Directed by Brian Duffield (No One Will Save You), Whalefall comes from 20th Century Studios and is based on Daniel Kraus’ 2023 novel, which Duffield co-wrote for the screen.
The film stars Austin Abrams alongside Josh Brolin, Elisabeth Shue (The Boys), Jane Levy (Evil Dead), John Ortiz (Kong: Skull Island), and Emily Rudd (Fear Street Part Two: 1978).
The source material has already earned serious praise, with Meagan Navarro calling the novel one of the best horror books of 2023, highlighting its mix of survival horror and grief-driven emotional storytelling.
With its suffocating premise and ticking-clock tension, Whalefall looks set to turn open water into pure nightmare fuel.
