Zach Cregger isn’t just stepping into the world of Resident Evil—he’s dragging it somewhere darker, meaner, and completely unhinged.

The filmmaker behind Barbarian and the upcoming Weapons is reimagining the iconic franchise with what he describes as “a seriously fucked up situation.” And if the official teaser trailer is any indication, he’s not exaggerating.

Austin Abrams leads the film as Bryan, a medical courier who gets pulled into a nightmare he doesn’t understand—and can’t escape. What starts as a routine job spirals into a relentless fight for survival as one catastrophic night unravels into pure chaos.

This isn’t just another adaptation of Resident Evil. It’s being positioned as a full reinvention—stripping things down to something more grounded, more intense, and far more disturbing. Sony is billing it as a “thrilling and terrifying” new vision for the long-running series, and from what we’ve seen so far, it leans hard into that promise.

Cregger directs from a script he co-wrote with Shay Hatten (John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum, Chapter 4), signaling a blend of visceral horror and relentless pacing.

The supporting cast brings serious weight, including Zach Cherry (Severance), Kali Reis (True Detective: Night Country), Paul Walter Hauser (Black Bird), and Johnno Wilson (Twisted Metal).

Behind the scenes, the film is backed by heavy hitters, with producers from Constantin Film, Vertigo Entertainment, and PlayStation Productions—all teams with deep roots in both horror and gaming adaptations.

Resident Evil hits theaters and IMAX on September 18.

Watch the official teaser now—just don’t expect to sleep after.
