‘The Black Phone 2’ Rings Loud at the Box Office With a Killer $26.5 Million Debut”

After a rocky year at the box office, Blumhouse finally has something to celebrate. Scott Derrickson’s The Black Phone 2 has brought the studio back to life, debuting with a chilling $26.5 million domestic opening across 3,411 theaters — and $42 million worldwide so far.

The sequel once again stars Ethan Hawke as The Grabber, the sadistic killer back from the dead to haunt his victims from beyond the grave.

For comparison, Derrickson’s first Black Phone opened to $23.6 million in 2021 before climbing to a monstrous $161.4 million global haul. While time will tell if the sequel can match those numbers, it’s already outpacing the original’s debut by several million dollars — a strong sign for both Blumhouse and horror fans.

So far, The Black Phone 2 holds the sixth biggest U.S. opening of 2025, trailing only heavy hitters like:

  • The Conjuring: Last Rites – $84 million
  • Final Destination: Bloodlines – $51.6 million
  • Sinners – $48 million
  • Weapons – $43.5 million
  • 28 Years Later – $30 million
  • The Black Phone 2 – $26.5 million

With a $30 million production budget, the film is already on track to turn a solid profit in the coming weeks.

In the sequel, “Four-time Academy Award® nominee Ethan Hawke returns to the most sinister role of his career as The Grabber seeks vengeance on Finn (Mason Thames) from beyond the grave by terrorizing Finn’s younger sister, Gwen (Madeleine McGraw).”

Director Scott Derrickson once again teams up with C. Robert Cargill on the script, with Joe Hill — author of the original short story — serving as executive producer.
