Horror Thriller ‘Sundowning’ Kicks Off Production with Cast Reveal from ‘Woman of the Hour’ Writer

Production is officially underway on Sundowning, and the psychological horror-thriller is already shaping up to be something deeply unsettling.

According to casting details revealed as filming begins, the project brings together a strong lineup led by Elizabeth Dulau (Andor), Susanne Wuest (Goodnight Mommy), Rukiya Bernard (Yellowjackets), and Robbie G.K. (Heated Rivalry).

Behind the camera is Ian McDonald, the writer-director known for Netflix’s serial killer thriller Woman of the Hour. With Sundowning, he leans fully into psychological horror—blending personal trauma with something far more disturbing beneath the surface.

The story follows a young musician crippled by gerontophobia—a consuming fear of aging and death. That fear drives her to distance herself from her dying parents, abandoning them when they need her most. But guilt has a way of pulling people back.

In search of redemption, she takes a job at a remote end-of-life care facility—an isolated sanctuary that promises peace and dignity in one’s final days.

Instead, she finds something else.

What initially appears serene and compassionate slowly begins to unravel. The facility’s calm exterior hides something deeply wrong, and the more she tries to atone for her past, the more she’s pulled into a nightmare that feels designed to confront her worst fears head-on.

This is where Sundowning separates itself—turning a very human fear into something weaponized.

Producer Steven Schneider (The Long Walk) praised McDonald’s approach, highlighting his ability to craft character-driven thrillers that explore institutional systems through a haunting lens. And with producers like Roy Lee (Barbarian) attached, the film is backed by a team that knows exactly how to build tension that lingers.

The project is being produced by Spooky Pictures alongside Hadron Films, with additional backing from Image Nation—teams behind titles like Watcher and Late Night with the Devil.

McDonald isn’t slowing down either. The filmmaker recently sold an occult-themed script to Netflix, signaling that he’s quickly becoming a name to watch in modern horror.

For now, Sundowning is just getting started—but everything about it points to a slow-burn descent into something far darker than it first appears.

Stay tuned.
