‘Bloodsport’ Remake Enters the Ring with Michaela Coel and A24
The Kumite is calling once again—and this time, it’s getting an A24 makeover.
A remake of Bloodsport is officially in development, with A24 tapping Michaela Coel (I May Destroy You) to write and direct a bold reimagining of the 1988 martial arts cult classic.
Producer Marc Toberoff (Predator: Badlands, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice) is on board, with Stuart Manashil (His House) and Peggy DiSalle serving as executive producers.
Originally directed by Newt Arnold, Bloodsport followed an American fighter who abandons the military to compete in the Kumite—an underground, no-holds-barred martial arts tournament in Hong Kong where brutality is the price of entry and death is always on the table.
The film famously launched Jean-Claude Van Damme into global stardom as Frank Dux, cementing its legacy as a staple of late-’80s action cinema.
Coel says her take will dig into the psyche behind the violence. “I’ve always been fascinated by fighters—the discipline, the intensity, the isolation,” she said. “I’m excited to explore that world, especially with A24. Let’s fucking go!”
Toberoff echoed the energy behind the revival, pointing to the original’s raw impact. “Bloodsport helped define the gritty aesthetic of early mixed martial arts. Bringing that high-stakes tournament back to the big screen is something I’m incredibly excited about.”
The original film spawned three sequels in the ’90s—none featuring Van Damme—and multiple remake attempts have come and gone over the years, with filmmakers like Phillip Noyce (Salt) and James McTeigue (V for Vendetta) previously circling the project.
Now, with Coel at the helm and A24 backing the fight, Bloodsport may finally be ready to step back into the ring.
