Jason Blum Says James Wan Will Heavily Shape the Future of ‘Saw’
The SAW franchise has officially found a new home at Blumhouse, which recently acquired the rights from Twisted Pictures following the success of Saw X. The massive deal includes the full film library, all ten previous entries, and even the franchise’s escape rooms and theme park attractions. A brand-new SAW film is already expected to enter development soon.
Franchise creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell are returning to “guide the future of the franchise” alongside Blumhouse and Lionsgate.
“SAW holds a special place in my heart,” Wan said. “Coming back to this world with a fresh perspective is thrilling and deeply personal. It marks a significant creative return for me, and I’m eager to embrace the original spirit while pushing the legacy in bold, unexpected ways.”
In a new Variety interview, Jason Blum shared more about his vision for the next era of SAW:
“It’s really hard to make 10 movies in a franchise — I don’t take that away from the original producers,” he said. “I’m grateful to them for allowing us to continue.”
Blum also revealed his core strategy:
“My creative outlook is what I always preach—get the people who made the magic in the first place more involved. James Wan will be hugely involved. That’s how we’re going to reinvent it.”
Wan directed the original 2004 SAW—co-written and co-starring Whannell—and helped shape the franchise’s brutal identity. Their last major involvement was with SAW III (2006), which they originally intended to end the saga by killing off both Jigsaw and Amanda. Instead, the franchise only grew stronger.
With Blumhouse now behind the blade and Wan returning to the blood-soaked roots, SAW looks primed for a gruesome rebirth. Stay tuned for what comes next.
