A terrifying legend from Southeast Asian folklore rises from the deep in Monster Island (also known as Orang Ikan), a World War II-set creature feature inspired by Creature from the Black Lagoon and Malay mythology. Shudder has just debuted the official trailer ahead of its global premiere on July 25, 2025.

Starring Dean Fujioka (Fullmetal Alchemist) and Callum Woodhouse (All Creatures Great and Small), Monster Island follows a Japanese soldier and a British POW who find themselves stranded on a remote island after their ship is torpedoed by Allied submarines. But survival becomes far more horrifying when they realize the island is home to a deadly mythological predator: the Orang Ikan—a vicious fish-like creature from Malay legend.

The film is a multi-national production between Singapore, Indonesia, Japan, and the UK, and marks a new directorial effort from Mike Wiluan, who previously produced Crazy Rich Asians and The Night Comes for Us. Wiluan also penned the screenplay.

“I’m very proud to have Shudder present the film in territories that have a rich history and appreciation for creature films,” Wiluan said in a statement. “The ‘Fish Man’ folklore is a globally recognized phenomenon. Orang Ikan offers a pan-Asian interpretation of the genre while also questioning the nature of humanity in wartime.”

Producer Fumie Suzuki Lancaster added, “We were thrilled to work with such a talented and acclaimed team. The film delivers nail-biting tension and surprising emotional depth. We believe Orang Ikan has global appeal, and we’re confident audiences will be captivated.”

Monster Island will be available exclusively on Shudder in North America, the UK, Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand starting July 25.
