HBO‘s “The Last of Us” series could potentially mark the genesis of a broader creative endeavor for the network. While the development of the second season is already in progress, the question arises: Could there be more in store for this post-apocalyptic world? According to Craig Mazin, co-creator of “The Last of Us,” the possibility of spin-offs is not off the table, provided that thorough discussions ensue regarding how an expansion of this universe would enhance its narrative and characters.

“We haven’t specifically delved into that because our primary focus is on conveying this central storyline,” Mazin shared with The Wrap regarding the prospect of spin-offs. “I’m not opposed to the idea of other shows that could draw inspiration from these characters or the world they inhabit.”

Addressing his role in shaping the franchise, Mazin continued, “I can’t say how much more of ‘The Last of Us’ I would personally tackle. These productions are massive undertakings, and I’m essentially dedicating a significant portion of the limited decades I have left to tell this tale. However, in principle, I have no reservations about it, and I’m certain Neil [Druckmann] would also be intrigued.”

Mazin added, “If a concept emerged that made sense, I see no reason not to explore it. My fervent hope is that, if such an opportunity arises, it is handled with the same level of meticulous care, reverence, and passion that we are currently pouring into this series.”

Expanding “The Last of Us” universe inevitably draws comparisons to the journey of AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” a series that unexpectedly gained immense popularity and evolved over the years. In a similar post-apocalyptic landscape, stories and characters connected to Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) could extend beyond Sony’s original vision for the show.

Several characters from the franchise come to mind as potential candidates for a spin-off series, including Abby Anderson from “The Last of Us Part II,” the primary antagonist, or Lev, a former member of the Seraphites and Yara’s brother. Their narratives extend beyond the events of “The Last of Us Part II.” If Sony chooses to focus on existing characters, there’s fertile ground to explore. Alternatively, similar to the approach of “The Walking Dead,” they could introduce entirely new characters to the universe, each with their own gripping stories to tell.
