This film, an adaptation of Karen Dionne’s bestselling novel of the same name, is helmed by director Neil Burger, known for works such as “Limitless” and “Divergent,” with the talented Daisy Ridley, of the Star Wars sequel trilogy fame, taking on the pivotal title role.
Crafted by Mark L. Smith, acclaimed for his work on “The Revenant,” and Elle Smith, marking her debut as a screenwriter, the movie’s narrative revolves around a woman harboring a secretive past. She embarks on a perilous journey back to the wilderness she once escaped, driven by the need to confront the most dangerous man she has ever known: her father.
In the film, Helena (Daisy Ridley) appears to lead an ordinary life, but beneath the surface lies a haunting truth. Her estranged father is none other than the infamous Marsh King, portrayed by Ben Mendelsohn. He kept Helena and her mother captive in the wilderness for years. When her father manages to escape from prison, Helena must confront her haunting past. Aware that he will stop at nothing to find her and her family, she must summon the strength to confront her demons and outwit the man who imparted to her the knowledge of survival in the wild.
The stellar cast also includes Ben Mendelsohn, Garrett Hedlund, Caren Pistorius, Gil Birmingham, and Brooklynn Prince.
Black Bear Pictures provided the financing for this gripping project, and it was produced by Black Bear’s Teddy Schwarzman, Keith Redmon from Anonymous Content, and Mark L. Smith. Executive producers include Michael Heimler, Charles Miller, Cliff Roberts, Robert Simonds, Adam Fogelson, John Friedberg, and Samuel J. Brown.
Karen Dionne’s source novel, released in 2017, paints a vivid backdrop for the film. It delves into the story of Helena Pelletier, whose loving family life conceals a dark secret. She is the result of an abduction, her mother having been kidnapped as a teenager by her father and held captive in a remote Michigan cabin within the marshlands. Helena, born two years after the abduction, grew up in the embrace of nature, even developing an affection for her father despite his at times brutal demeanor. However, her perception changes drastically when she discovers the full extent of his savagery.
More than two decades later, Helena has buried her traumatic past so deep that even her husband remains unaware of it. But when her father escapes from prison, leaving a trail of bloodshed, and vanishes into the marsh, Helena is convinced that traditional law enforcement stands no chance against him. Only one person possesses the skills to track down the survivalist known as the Marsh King: his daughter.
