Prepare for the nationwide release of “The Strangers: Chapter 1” on May 17, 2024, the first installment of a fresh trilogy rebooted by Lionsgate and director Renny Harlin.

While “The Strangers: Chapter 1” is positioned as a homage to the original 2008 film, its sequels, Chapters 2 and 3, promise to chart new narrative territories.

With hopes that subsequent films will showcase Harlin’s distinctive filmmaking style, “The Strangers: Chapter 1” seems to closely mirror Bryan Bertino’s original home invasion classic, albeit with minor tweaks. The trailer evokes familiar elements, concluding with a modified version of the iconic line from the 2008 movie.

Diverging from the original’s dynamic, the protagonists in this rendition are portrayed as a content couple, adding a fresh perspective to the narrative. However, the tagline, “Discover how the Strangers became the Strangers,” hints at a potential prequel storyline.

Starring Madelaine Petsch, Froy Gutierrez, Rachel Shenton, Ema Horvath, and Gabe Basso, the film follows a couple’s night of terror in a remote Airbnb in Venus, Oregon, after their car breaks down.

Directed by Harlin and scripted by Alan R. Cohen and Alan Freedland, Lionsgate is set to distribute globally. Producers include Courtney Solomon, Mark Canton, Christopher Milburn, Gary Raskin, Alastair Burlingham, and Charlie Dombek.

“The Strangers” franchise originated in 2008 with Bryan Bertino’s chilling home invasion thriller, followed by “The Strangers: Prey at Night” in 2018, which introduced the menacing trio of the Man in the Mask, Dollface, and Pinup Girl.
