Renowned studio NEON has made an exciting announcement regarding “They Follow,” the highly anticipated sequel to the modern horror classic “It Follows” from 2014. This new project is set to be helmed by visionary writer/director David Robert Mitchell and will star Maika Monroe, who previously earned an Empire Award® nomination for her role in the original film.

In the first installment, Monroe portrayed Jay Height, a young woman pursued by an enigmatic supernatural force after a sexual encounter. Fast forward to 2024, and the threat has now expanded its reach to become ubiquitous.

NEON is poised to introduce the title to international buyers at AFM this week, with principal photography scheduled to commence in 2024. NEON will co-produce the film in partnership with Good Fear Content. The team behind the project includes Mitchell as a producer, alongside Jake Weiner and Chris Bender of Good Fear Content, as well as the original producers of “It Follows” – David Kaplan, Erik Rommesmo, Rebecca Green, and Laura Smith.

“They Follow” marks the second collaboration between NEON CEO Tom Quinn and filmmaker David Robert Mitchell. Quinn’s label, RADiUS, released “It Follows” in theaters in 2014, swiftly earning it a cult classic status and a domestic gross of $15 million.

David Robert Mitchell’s journey in the film industry began with the coming-of-age drama “The Myth of the American Sleepover” in 2010, which premiered at South by Southwest. He gained critical acclaim with his second full-length feature, “It Follows,” even earning a Critics Choice Awards® nomination for Best Sci-Fi/Horror Movie. In 2018, Mitchell wrote, produced, and directed the black comedy/mystery “Under the Silver Lake,” starring Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough. Currently, he is in development on an untitled Warner Bros. and Bad Robot project with Anne Hathaway.

Maika Monroe, known for her role in “It Follows,” recently completed production on “Longlegs,” a project co-starring Nicolas Cage, which NEON plans to release in 2024. Following her breakout performance, Monroe appeared in Neil Jordan’s “Greta” for Focus Features, as well as “Hot Summer Nights,” “Villains,” “Honey Boy,” and “Watcher.”

“They Follow” will join NEON’s growing list of productions, which includes Brandon Cronenberg’s “Infinity Pool,” Bishal Dutta’s “It Lives Inside,” “Cuckoo,” the feature film debut of Hunter Schafer, the narrative remake of “The Painter and the Thief,” Asif Kapadia’s “2073,” and Joshua Oppenheimer’s “The End,” a golden-age musical starring Academy Award® winner Tilda Swinton.
