While Guillermo del Toro is immersed in his Frankenstein project, director Maggie Gyllenhaal seems poised to kick off production for “The Bride,” an update on Bride of Frankenstein, as indicated by the Production List.

Confirming earlier speculations, the listing reveals that “The Bride” will feature Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard in the role of a detective.

However, specific plot details are not provided beyond describing it as a “horror thriller, about the Bride of Frankenstein.” Consequently, it remains unclear whether “The Bride” will present a faithful period horror remake or offer a contemporary twist on the classic horror narrative.

In the original 1935 film directed by James Whale, the story unfolds as “After recovering from injuries sustained in the mob attack upon himself and his creation, Dr. Frankenstein (Colin Clive) falls under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (Ernest Thesiger), who insists the now-chastened doctor resume his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the Monster (Boris Karloff) remains on the run from those who wish to destroy him without understanding that his intentions are generally good despite his lack of socialization and self-control.”

Newly revealed is the addition of Jessie Buckley (known for “Men” and “I’m Thinking of Ending Things”) to “The Bride’s” cast, although details about her character remain undisclosed.

Christian Bale, most recently seen in the Netflix period horror movie “The Pale Blue Eye,” centered around a young Edgar Allan Poe, is set to take on the role of Frankenstein. “The Bride” marks Gyllenhaal’s second directorial venture; her directorial debut was the 2021 film “The Lost Daughter,” starring Olivia Colman.

Numerous attempts to remake “Bride of Frankenstein” have been announced over the years, notably with the ill-fated Dark Universe and A24’s long-dormant “Bride” project. Undoubtedly, Frankenstein continues to be a prominent theme in recent horror offerings. Fortunately, this abundance of options provides ample entertainment while awaiting more details about Gyllenhaal’s interpretation of the Universal Classic Monster.

Production for “The Bride” is slated to commence in March.
