Netflix is reportedly taking on the iconic classic monster tale with a remake of ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ titled ‘The Bride,’ and Maggie Gyllenhaal is set to helm the director’s chair.

The news, first reported by World of Reel, comes from Production Weekly, which reveals an exciting cast lineup, including Penelope Cruz as the Bride, Christian Bale as Frankenstein, and Peter Sarsgaard among others.

The original ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ film, directed by James Whale in 1935, follows Dr. Frankenstein (played by Colin Clive) as he is brought under the control of his former mentor, Dr. Pretorius (portrayed by Ernest Thesiger), to continue his experiments in creating new life. Meanwhile, the iconic Monster (embodied by Boris Karloff) is on the run, misunderstood despite his good intentions due to his lack of socialization and self-control.

While the listing does not divulge plot details, it remains uncertain whether ‘The Bride’ will stay true to the period horror roots of the original or take a contemporary approach to the classic tale.

Christian Bale recently starred in another Netflix period horror movie, ‘The Pale Blue Eye,’ centered around a young Edgar Allan Poe. For Maggie Gyllenhaal, ‘The Bride’ will mark her second venture as a director after her successful debut with ‘The Lost Daughter’ in 2021, starring Olivia Colman.

Over the years, various attempts at remaking ‘Bride of Frankenstein’ have been announced, including the ill-fated Dark Universe and A24’s long-delayed project.

Production for ‘The Bride’ is expected to commence in early 2024, though it’s worth noting that the schedule might be subject to change.

While fans await further updates on ‘The Bride,’ they can look forward to ‘Poor Things,’ a film reminiscent of ‘Bride of Frankenstein,’ set to arrive soon.

As more details about ‘The Bride’ emerge, stay tuned for the latest developments on this exciting project.
