Universal’s “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” is making its way to streaming platforms next month.

Scheduled for arrival on Paramount+ with SHOWTIME on February 11, 2024, this film, directed by André Øvredal (known for “The Autopsy of Jane Doe” and “Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark”), takes a departure from the comedic elements of Renfield and embraces a classic, Hammer-style horror experience set at sea. This adaptation draws inspiration from a single passage in Bram Stoker’s iconic horror novel, “Dracula,” specifically known as “The Captain’s Log,” marking a unique and never-before-seen approach to the source material.

The narrative unfolds based on a single chapter from Stoker’s 1897 novel, focusing on the Captain’s Log. The story revolves around the Russian schooner, Demeter, tasked with transporting twenty-four unmarked wooden crates from Carpathia to London. The film delves into the eerie events that befall the ill-fated crew during their ocean voyage, haunted each night by a terrifying presence onboard the ship. Upon its arrival near Whitby Harbour, the Demeter is discovered as a derelict vessel with no trace of the crew.

Corey Hawkins, known for his roles in “Kong: Skull Island” and “The Walking Dead,” takes center stage in “The Last Voyage of the Demeter.” The script, penned by Zak Olkewicz (credited for “Bullet Train”), brings to life a cast featuring Aisling Franciosi, Liam Cunningham, David Dastmalchian, Jon Jon Briones, Stefan Kapicic, Nikolai Nikolaeff, and Javier Botet as Dracula.

In a review, Øvredal’s directorial prowess is commended for offering rich world-building, an impressive scale, a commitment to practical effects, and fully realized characters that ground the increasingly claustrophobic and grim tale set at sea. The film amplifies horror with regularity, showcasing Øvredal’s talent for scare crafting, tension building, and breathless staging, transforming a familiar tale into an exhilarating horror adventure unafraid to go for the jugular.

Adding to the film’s allure is stunning production design by Edward Thomas, known for his work in “Escape Room,” “Escape Room: Tournament of Champions,” and “Monster Hunter.”

Make sure to mark your calendars and immerse yourself in this period horror gem when “The Last Voyage of the Demeter” arrives on streaming platforms next month.
