Steven Spielberg Says ‘Weapons’ Is So Good He’s Done with Horror

Fresh off Oscar buzz for Amy Madigan’s chilling turn in Weapons, Zach Cregger’s horror hit has just earned a co-sign that carries serious weight: Steven Spielberg.

In a new interview with Empire, Spielberg admitted that Weapons didn’t just impress him—it completely scratched an itch he’s been holding onto for decades.

“I haven’t directed a horror film yet, and I’ve always wanted to,” Spielberg said. “But when I see something like Weapons, it satisfies that urge.”

He doubled down, explaining that the film hit so hard it actually killed his desire—at least for now—to step into the genre himself.

“When I see a great horror film like Weapons, I don’t feel the need to top it or chase it. It satisfies me so completely, it kind of stops me from wanting to make a really scary movie.”

That’s about as high praise as it gets—especially coming from the man behind Jaws. Yes, Spielberg may not consider it straight horror, but let’s be real: when the director of Jaws says your movie delivers, you listen.

The Weapons universe isn’t slowing down, either. A prequel centered on Aunt Gladys—currently titled Gladys—is already in development, with Cregger co-writing alongside Zach Shields.

Before that, Cregger is taking on a major franchise, directing a new Resident Evil film set to hit theaters on September 18, 2026.

Spielberg, meanwhile, is heading back to familiar territory with extraterrestrial terror. His next film, Disclosure Day, lands in theaters June 12, 2026.
