King’s Daughters: First Look at New Folk Horror from Pascal Plante

From Pascal Plante, the director of Red Rooms, comes King’s Daughters, a historical survival drama infused with folk-horror elements. The first image has now been revealed via Variety, offering a glimpse into the film’s grim and unsettling tone.

Set in 1663, King’s Daughters follows the cursed transatlantic voyage of a group of orphaned girls sent by King Louis XIV to be married off in New France—present-day Quebec. Among them is 13-year-old Catherine Moitié, as the women endure a brutal 111-day journey marked by disease, starvation, superstition, and death aboard a ship spiraling into chaos.

The cast includes Sandrine Bonnaire, Laurie Babin, Lauréna Thellier, Zoé Adjani, and Marguerite Champoux. The screenplay was co-written by Plante and Dominique Dussault.

Production is led by Nemesis Films alongside La Maison de Prod and Avenue B, with WTFilms handling worldwide sales. The film has already secured distribution in France through Tandem and in Canada via Entract.

“While in the middle of filming this strange beast, it is a comfort to know that solid partners like WTFilms are already believing in us in such a way,” said Plante. “What a joy to be part of their genre-bending, eclectic, and oh-so-badass catalog.”

Producers Dussault, Stéphanie Morissette, and Caroline Bonmarchand emphasized the film’s themes of survival and female solidarity, describing it as a story of oppression, resilience, and the origins of sisterhood.

King’s Daughters began filming in Montreal last March and will continue production this June in St-Malo, France, with a planned release in 2027.
