Titled a “hallucinogenic urban exploration horror film,” John Pata’s “Black Mold” claimed the Best Indie Feature accolade at this year’s Panic Fest in the US and is set to make its debut on Tubi this week.

Exclusively premiering on Tubi this Thursday, December 7, “Black Mold” follows photographer Brooke (portrayed by Agnes Albright from True Detective) and her companion Tanner (played by Andrew Bailes). The duo trespasses into abandoned, off-limits buildings in pursuit of artistic expression and an adrenaline rush. Their escapades take a dark turn when they infiltrate Franklin Hill, a significant facility with a haunting history, encountering a deeply paranoid squatter (Jeremy Holm from Brooklyn 45) who holds them captive.

As the captor prolongs their confinement, eerie revelations surface, blending artistic ambition with inner conflict in a dangerous concoction.

Hailing from the creators behind Brooklyn 45 and The Stylist, “Black Mold” is a production of Head Trauma, in collaboration with The Line Film Co. and Shatterglass Films. Producers Sarah Sharp, Jen Shelby, Robert Patrick Stern, and Iman Sharabash spearheaded the project, with Jill Gevargizian, Tony Wash, and Kevin McGrail serving as Co-Producers.

Meagan Navarro’s brief review from Panic Fest highlights John Pata’s debut feature, illustrating the perils of urban exploration and the use of psychological horror to exploit the protagonists’ deepest fears. The narrative provides compelling jump-scare moments for Tanner and delves into Brooke’s gradual uncovering of childhood trauma.

While acknowledging some narrative loose ends, Meagan commends Albright’s compelling performance, ensuring audience engagement despite occasional thin plot stretches. She notes that while the resolution might not entirely satisfy, the film’s adept direction and execution promise captivating visual intrigue within this tense single-location thriller.
