‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Renewed for Season 2 at HBO — New Season Set in 1935
Pennywise is coming back.
HBO has officially renewed IT: Welcome to Derry for a second season, bringing the terrifying world of Stephen King’s IT back to the small screen.
While a second season was widely expected following the success of the first, HBO’s official announcement finally confirms that Pennywise will be returning—and this time, the story is heading even further into Derry’s dark past.
Season 2 will be set in 1935, continuing the series’ exploration of the horrifying events that have plagued the town throughout history.
As fans of IT know, Pennywise awakens roughly every 27 years to feed on the children of Derry. The first season of IT: Welcome to Derry was set in 1962, while Andy Muschietti’s IT (2017) took place in 1989 before IT: Chapter Two (2019) jumped forward another 27 years to 2016.
Each cycle is marked by horrific violence, with Pennywise emerging from the shadows to terrorize a new generation.
According to Deadline, the second season will take place during the Great Depression and center on the bloody Bradley Gang massacre.
The gang, a group of bank robbers, arrives in Derry looking to purchase ammunition—only to encounter something far more horrifying than they could have imagined.
Brad Caleb Kane, who is also serving as showrunner on HBO’s upcoming Crystal Lake, will return to lead Season 2.
And, of course, fans can expect Bill Skarsgård to once again take on the role of Pennywise the Dancing Clown.
“We are excited to return to the chilling world of Derry and to further expand on Andy and Barbara Muschietti’s horrifically iconic adaptation,” HBO’s Sarah Aubrey said. “Together with Brad Caleb Kane, they will break new ground in season two, deepening the terror, the mystery, and the unforgettable Pennywise lore that fans love to devour.”
Andy and Barbara Muschietti also expressed their excitement about continuing to explore Stephen King’s terrifying creation.
“Continuing to explore and expand on the amazing world Stephen King created is an absolute privilege,” the filmmakers said. “The support of our partners at HBO and Warner Bros. Television is priceless. Boy do we love our jobs!”
With Season 2 moving the story back to 1935, IT: Welcome to Derry is digging even deeper into the history of the cursed town—and Pennywise may have plenty more nightmares left to reveal.
