Some secrets are better left buried.

Based on Colleen Hoover’s bestselling 2018 novel, the psychological thriller Verity is heading to theaters and premium formats on October 2, 2026, from Amazon MGM Studios. Anne Hathaway and Dakota Johnson lead the unsettling new adaptation, which promises a dangerous mix of obsession, manipulation, and buried secrets.

Check out the official trailer below.

Hathaway stars as renowned author Verity Crawford, whose career is brought to a halt after a mysterious tragedy leaves her unable to finish her bestselling book series. Enter Lowen Ashleigh (Johnson), a struggling writer hired to complete Verity’s work.

Lowen travels to the isolated Crawford estate, expecting to dig through her predecessor’s notes and bring the unfinished series to a close. Instead, she discovers something far more disturbing: what appears to be Verity’s secret autobiographical manuscript.

The pages contain shocking confessions about Verity’s husband, Josh, and the horrifying events surrounding their family. As Lowen continues reading, the line between truth and fiction begins to disappear.

What follows is a psychological game where Lowen struggles to determine who is telling the truth—and whether what she has uncovered is a genuine confession, an elaborate manipulation, or something even more sinister.

The film stars Josh Hartnett, Ismael Cruz Cordova, and Brady Wagner alongside Hathaway and Johnson.

The Big Sick director Michael Showalter helms the adaptation from a screenplay by Nick Antosca, known for Hannibal and Antlers.

Producers include Showalter and Jordana Mollick for Semi-Formal Productions, Antosca and Alex Hedlund for Eat the Cat, Hathaway for Somewhere Pictures, Hoover for Heartbones Entertainment, and Stacey Sher for Shiny Penny. Johnson serves as an executive producer alongside Kerry Orent and Lauren Levine.

Verity is rated R for “sexual content, some nudity, language, violence, and bloody images.”

The psychological nightmare arrives October 2, 2026.
