One of Stephen King’s darkest stories is finally making its return to the screen.

According to The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider, a new film adaptation of King’s 1996 novel ‘Desperation’ is in development, bringing together horror legends Stephen King and Sam Raimi with the directing duo behind Final Destination Bloodlines, Adam B. Stein and Zach Lipovsky.

Raimi is set to produce the upcoming adaptation, while Stein and Lipovsky will direct. Searchlight Pictures is currently attached as the studio behind the project.

Published in 1996, ‘Desperation’ follows a group of travelers who find themselves trapped in the isolated Nevada desert town of Desperation after being abducted by Collie Entragian, a seemingly unhinged deputy sheriff. As the survivors fight to escape, they discover something far more terrifying is controlling the town.

Entragian has become possessed by an ancient evil entity known as Tak — a supernatural force that can manipulate the surrounding environment and must take new hosts to survive.

The group soon realizes that escaping Desperation will require more than simply surviving the town’s horrors. They must confront the evil waiting beneath it.

The novel was previously adapted as a 2006 television movie starring Ron Perlman, Tom Skerritt, and Steven Weber, but this new version marks the first major attempt to bring King’s story back to theaters.

Fans may also recognize ‘Desperation’ as part of a unique experiment in King’s career. The novel was released alongside ‘The Regulators’, a “mirror novel” that shared some characters but explored a completely different reality.

The collaboration between Raimi and King also carries some fascinating history. King famously praised Raimi’s 1981 cult classic ‘The Evil Dead’, helping bring attention and legitimacy to the independent horror film that launched Raimi’s career.

Now, decades later, the two horror icons are joining forces on one of King’s most unsettling stories.
