‘IT: Welcome to Derry’ Season 2 Is Officially in Development

While HBO has yet to officially greenlight a second season of IT: Welcome to Derry, the nightmare is far from over. Behind the scenes, Season 2 is already in active development.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, co-creator Andy Muschietti has quickly become one of TV’s most in-demand names following the massive success of HBO’s IT prequel series. Despite the lack of a formal renewal, momentum is clearly on the show’s side, with plans for a second season already taking shape.

That confidence isn’t surprising. Welcome to Derry delivered one of the strongest launches in HBO Max history, ranking as the platform’s third most-watched debut to date.

Set decades before the events of Stephen King’s iconic novel and Muschietti’s IT films, Season 1 transported viewers back to 1962, peeling back the layers of Derry’s long-buried horrors and the origins of the shape-shifting evil known as Pennywise the Clown.

If development continues as planned, Season 2 is expected to move even further into the past, with the story shifting to 1935. A potential third season has reportedly been mapped out as well, with events unfolding in 1908—suggesting a sweeping, multi-era exploration of Derry’s cursed history.

The series was developed by Andy Muschietti alongside Barbara Muschietti and Jason Fuchs, with Fuchs sharing showrunner duties with Brad Caleb Kane (Crystal Lake).

Bill Skarsgård returns to terrorize audiences once again as Pennywise, joined by a stacked ensemble cast that includes Jovan Adepo (The Stand), Taylour Paige (The Toxic Avenger), Chris Chalk (Gotham), James Remar (Dexter), Stephen Rider (Daredevil), Madeleine Stowe (12 Monkeys), and Rudy Mancuso (The Flash).
