Kristen Stewart Says She’d Love to Direct a Twilight Reboot

Fresh off her feature directorial debut with The Chronology of Water, Kristen Stewart is already flirting with the idea of returning to the franchise that made her a global icon—this time from behind the camera.

While attending the Palm Springs International Film Festival, Stewart told Entertainment Tonight that she’d be more than open to directing a Twilight reboot, praising the original films for their raw, idiosyncratic energy.

“I love what all of the directors did with the movies,” Stewart said. “They were so themselves and weird and kind of squirrely—really present in that moment, before they knew what they were yet.”

Stewart went on to imagine what a reimagining could look like with the benefit of hindsight, studio backing, and creative freedom. “Imagine if we had a huge budget and a bunch of love and support,” she added. “I would love to readapt. Yeah—sure, I’ll do the remake. I’m doing it. I’m committed,” she joked.

Based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling novel series, the Twilight saga launched in 2008 and wrapped up in 2012, ultimately earning over $3 billion worldwide and cementing its place in pop culture history.

Stewart would join a notable lineup of filmmakers who previously helmed the franchise, including Catherine Hardwicke (Twilight), Chris Weitz (New Moon), David Slade (Eclipse), and Bill Condon (Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2).

Of course, Stewart starred in all five films as Bella Swan, a teenager caught between vampire Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) and werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner).

Whether a reboot ever materializes remains to be seen, but the Twilight universe is far from dormant. An animated adaptation of Midnight Sun—Meyer’s companion novel told from Edward’s perspective—is currently in development at Netflix.

If nothing else, Stewart’s comments have reopened the door to Forks—and fans are already imagining what a darker, more auteur-driven Twilight might look like today.
