In 1991, director Martin Scorsese reimagined the 1962 film ‘Cape Fear,’ based on John D. MacDonald’s novel ‘The Executioners’ from 1957, in collaboration with Steven Spielberg’s Amblin Entertainment. It seems they’re revisiting this property: Deadline’s report reveals that Scorsese and Spielberg are partnering with Nick Antosca, the creator of “Channel Zero,” for a fresh series that promises an unconventional approach.

This marks the debut television collaboration between Scorsese and Spielberg, both serving as executive producers alongside the project’s creator, showrunner, and executive producer, Nick Antosca, known for works like “Brand New Cherry Flavor” and “Antlers.”

The series is described as a contemporary thriller delving into America’s fascination with true crime in the 21st century. It follows the story of a married pair of attorneys facing a storm as a notorious killer, once put away by them, emerges from years behind bars.

Across various adaptations of ‘Cape Fear,’ the narrative consistently revolves around a lawyer’s family facing torment from a convict he once helped imprison.

The 1962 adaptation, directed by J. Lee Thompson, starred Gregory Peck, Robert Mitchum, and Polly Bergen, drawing inspiration from Alfred Hitchcock’s style. Scorsese’s 1991 feature included Robert De Niro, Nick Nolte, and Jessica Lange, with appearances from Peck and Mitchum.

Reportedly, Antosca has long been captivated by both ‘Cape Fear’ movies since childhood and initiated discussions with Universal about adapting the property, leveraging his seven-year tenure with UCP.

The involvement of Scorsese, Spielberg, and Antosca has ignited considerable interest in “Cape Fear,” sparking a competitive bidding war among potential platforms. Potential destinations for the series include Peacock, Apple TV+, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, among others, considering their past collaborations and existing deals.

The executive producers for the series include Scorsese, Spielberg, Antosca, Alex Hedlund via Eat The Cat (Antosca’s company), and Darryl Frank and Justin Falvey through Amblin Television.
