Neon, the studio known for its enigmatic teasers, dropped a new puzzling snippet for an undisclosed horror film, sparking speculation across the internet early last Friday. While the studio remains tight-lipped about the film’s identity, the teaser, featuring a 9-1-1 call alongside a Polaroid, strongly suggests it might be linked to the upcoming thriller “Longlegs,” featuring Nicolas Cage.

The film, helmed by Oz Perkins, son of legendary “Psycho” star Anthony Perkins, boasts a portfolio of acclaimed chillers such as “The Blackcoat’s Daughter,” “I Am The Pretty Thing That Lives in the House,” and “Greta and Hansel.” Starring Maika Monroe as a young FBI agent pursuing a serial killer entwined with the occult, “Longlegs” sees Cage in a pivotal role, not only acting but also producing alongside co-stars Blair Underwood and Alicia Witt. Describing the movie to John Carpenter, Cage hinted at a character grappling with auditory hallucinations, likening it to a possessed Geppetto crafting haunting dolls.

Neon, recognized for its art-house horror repertoire, akin to A24 but with a more intense edge, has previously released boundary-pushing films like Brandon Cronenberg’s NC-17-rated works, “Possessor” and “Infinity Pool,” as well as lesser-known gems such as “Eileen” and “It Lives Inside.”

The prospect of a new horror thriller headlined by Nicolas Cage and Maika Monroe has ignited anticipation, swiftly becoming a highlight on many 2024 horror movie watchlists. While details on the premiere date remain elusive, a debut at SXSW isn’t improbable. However, hopes for a surprise screening at Sundance might just be wishful thinking, especially for this hopeful attendee.
