Last year, Winnie the Pooh had a surprising twist with ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,’ an unofficial horror movie. Now, it’s Mickey Mouse’s turn to step into the shadows with ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap,‘ an unorthodox plunge into horror.

The timing is uncanny: the iconic Mickey Mouse recently entered the public domain, courtesy of the 1928 film ‘Steamboat Willie.’ This milestone has spurred the release of the first teaser for ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap,’ a low-budget horror flick that cleverly skirts legal entanglements with Disney, made evident by its delayed announcement despite having been filmed earlier.

So, what’s the premise of this surreal horror venture? It all revolves around Alex’s 21st birthday celebration, trapped at an arcade during a late shift. Her friends conspire to surprise her, but the evening takes a nightmarish turn when a sinister figure donning Mickey Mouse’s guise unleashes a deadly game upon them. Survival becomes the ultimate challenge.

Director Jamie Bailey shared with The Hollywood Reporter, “We just wanted to have fun with it all. I mean it’s Steamboat Willie‘s Mickey Mouse murdering people. It’s ridiculous. We ran with it and had fun doing it and I think it shows.”

The ensemble cast, including Sophie McIntosh, Callum Sywyk, Allegra Nocita, Ben Harris, Damir Kovic, Mackenzie Mills, Nick Biskupek, and Simon Phillips, brings this twisted narrative to life.

Anticipation surrounds the possible release of ‘Mickey’s Mouse Trap’ as early as March 2024, according to THR‘s report.

This film is the latest addition to a burgeoning trend of horror movies capitalizing on iconic characters in the public domain. Following the wake of ‘Winnie the Pooh: Blood and Honey,’ a sequel is in the works. Moreover, upcoming titles like ‘Cinderella’s Curse,’ ‘Peter Pan: Neverland Nightmare,’ and ‘Bambi: The Reckoning’ promise to delve deeper into this unconventional realm of horror cinema.
