Curry Barker Wants to Turn One Wish Willow Into an Anthology Series
Just as his first theatrical feature Obsession continues gaining attention, filmmaker Curry Barker is already looking toward the future. Between the upcoming paranormal horror film Anything But Ghosts and his involvement with the future of the Texas Chainsaw Massacre franchise, Barker has plenty on his plate — but that hasn’t stopped him from thinking about expanding the twisted world of Obsession.
At the center of the film is the eerie One Wish Willow toy, a supernatural object capable of granting any desire imaginable. In Obsession, one man uses it to make the girl he loves care for him more than anyone else in the world, while another character wishes for unimaginable wealth. Both wishes come true almost instantly — though with horrifying consequences.
Speaking with Total Film, Barker revealed that if Obsession were to continue, he’d love to build the franchise around the One Wish Willow concept itself.
“I obviously have a couple more things that I’m excited about next, but I do see Obsession 2, maybe,” Barker explained. “Or even, what really is exciting to me, is maybe an anthology. Like a one-hour episode… each episode is a different wish that goes completely off the rails.”
The filmmaker went on to describe the possibility of transforming the idea into an anthology television series, potentially bringing in other directors to expand the mythology from their own perspectives.
“Maybe I’ll direct the pilot with the same DP, and then you could invite other filmmakers to give their spin at it,” Barker said. “That would be really cool.”
Barker also acknowledged one of the biggest logical questions surrounding Obsession — namely, how the world can remain relatively normal if a wish-granting supernatural toy is apparently available to anyone for only $6.99.
“It’s kind of a plot hole,” Barker admitted.
According to the filmmaker, his personal explanation is that each wish creates an alternate reality where that specific desire becomes real, rather than every wish existing simultaneously in one shared world.
“Every time someone makes a wish, they enter into an alternate reality, where their wish comes true,” Barker explained. “So you’re not experiencing everybody’s wish at the same time.”
Of course, even Barker admits the logic starts to unravel under scrutiny.
“But then it doesn’t make sense, because the money falls from the ceiling,” he added before joking, “Yeah, it’s broken.”
In Obsession, “after breaking the mysterious One Wish Willow to win his crush’s heart, a hopeless romantic finds himself getting exactly what he asked for — only to discover that some desires come with a dark and sinister price.”
Obsession is now playing in theaters nationwide.
