‘Chucky’ Returns: Don Mancini Writing a New Big Screen Nightmare

The killer doll isn’t done carving up bodies just yet.

After Chucky wrapped its three-season run, franchise icon Jennifer Tilly teased that “more Chucky is in the works.” Now we know exactly what that means—and it’s bad news for anyone who thought the Good Guy doll was finished.

Franchise mastermind Don Mancini took the stage at Steel City Con this weekend and confirmed he’s currently writing a brand-new Chucky movie—one that’s headed straight for theaters.

And if you’re hoping for something meaner, nastier, and closer to the franchise’s roots, you’re in luck.

Mancini revealed that the new film will channel the stripped-down terror of Curse of Chucky—the installment that dialed back the camp and reintroduced the franchise as a more grounded, sinister experience before reconnecting to the larger continuity. That film, along with Cult of Chucky, helped lay the foundation for the recent TV series, while still keeping one foot firmly planted in the original nightmare.

Importantly, this isn’t a reboot. Mancini is doubling down on the franchise’s famously tight continuity, with the new movie set to tie directly into past films and the television series. The timeline remains intact—and the body count is about to grow.

We’ve also learned that the goal here is simple: make Chucky scary again. Think less of the wild, self-aware chaos of Bride of Chucky and Seed of Chucky, and more of the cold-blooded menace that defined the original Child’s Play and its early sequels.

Unlike the recent TV outing, this next chapter is being designed specifically for a theatrical release—putting Chucky back where he arguably does his best work: on the big screen, with a packed audience ready to jump.

For those keeping count, the franchise currently sits at eight films (including the separate-universe remake). Mancini’s new script will mark the ninth entry overall—and another chapter in the long-running, interconnected Chucky saga he’s been building for decades.

Stay tuned. He’s not done playing.
