Mike Flanagan Finishes Filming ‘The Exorcist’ Reboot

Mike Flanagan’s highly anticipated return to horror has reached a major milestone, with filming now officially complete on The Exorcist.

The filmmaker shared the news on Instagram, writing, “That’s a wrap. What an incredible experience. Forever grateful to this extraordinary cast and crew!”

Flanagan’s upcoming film won’t be a remake of William Friedkin’s iconic 1973 classic, nor will it continue the story established in 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer. Instead, the project is set to tell a completely original story within The Exorcist universe.

The film features an impressive ensemble cast led by Scarlett Johansson, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Diane Lane, Jacobi Jupe, Sasha Calle, and John Leguizamo. Joining them are several Flanagan regulars, including Rahul Kohli, Hamish Linklater, Carla Gugino, Kate Siegel, Samantha Sloyan, Robert Longstreet, Carl Lumbly, Matt Biedel, Gil Bellows, John Gallagher Jr., and Benjamin Pajak.

Speaking previously about the project, Flanagan emphasized his desire to create something fresh rather than relying on nostalgia.

“This is an opportunity to do something that I believe has never been done within the franchise,” Flanagan said. “Something that honors what came before it but isn’t built on nostalgia.”

He also revealed his ambitious goal for the film, calling it an opportunity to make “the scariest movie” of his career.

Flanagan is producing through Red Room Pictures alongside Jason Blum for Blumhouse and Atomic Monster, with David Robinson producing for Morgan Creek Entertainment. Alexandra Magistro and Ryan Turek serve as executive producers.

The Exorcist is currently scheduled to arrive in theaters on March 12, 2027, through Universal Pictures.

The filmmaker remains one of the busiest names in horror. In addition to The Exorcist, Flanagan has Stephen King’s Carrie heading to Prime Video later this year, co-wrote DC’s upcoming horror film Clayface, and has recently been attached to a new adaptation of King’s The Mist.
