Lionsgate and BuzzFeed are joining forces to bring the spine-chilling viral narrative of Dear David to life on the silver screen in an all-new horror film, and we are excited to reveal the official poster artwork for the movie today.

As you await the impending outbreak of terror, take a glimpse at the captivating poster below.

Mark your calendars, as Lionsgate is set to unleash the Dear David movie in theaters, On Demand, and Digital, just in time for the haunting season on October 13, 2023. Get a foretaste of the eerie experience by watching the official trailer for Dear David up here.

The unsettling saga began on August 7th, 2017, when acclaimed cartoonist Adam Ellis embarked on a journey recounting the haunting presence of a deceased child in his apartment, relentlessly attempting to claim his life. The initial tweet quickly garnered over 55,000 retweets and 76,000 likes, as documented by the platform Know Your Meme.

Ellis initially shared, “My apartment is currently being haunted by the ghost of a dead child, and he’s trying to kill me.” This tweet initiated a thread chronicling the alleged otherworldly disturbances.

In the cinematic rendition, comic artist Adam (played by Augustus Prew) faces the aftermath of confronting online trolls, succumbing to bouts of sleep paralysis while an empty rocking chair in his apartment mysteriously sways. As he records a series of increasingly malevolent incidents through tweets, Adam becomes convinced that the malevolent spirit of a deceased child named David is haunting him. Prompted by his employer to continue the “Dear David” narrative, Adam begins to lose his grasp on the boundary between the virtual world and reality. The film draws inspiration from the viral Twitter thread created by BuzzFeed’s own comic artist, Adam Ellis.

John McPhail, acclaimed for “Anna and the Apocalypse,” takes the director’s chair for Dear David. The cast features Augustus Prew, Andrea Bang, Rene Escobar Jr., Cameron Nicoll, and Justin Long.

The screenplay is skillfully penned by Mike Van Waes.

Lauren Bixby, Vice President of Co-Productions & Acquisitions at Lionsgate, expressed, “Dear David encapsulates an unsettlingly eerie and riveting tale that seamlessly translates onto the grand canvas of the cinema. It aligns perfectly with our objective of captivating global Millennial and Gen Z audiences by amplifying modern, genuine voices.”

It’s worth noting that Dear David has received an R rating due to its inclusion of violent content, language, and sexual reference.
