The Further is still calling.

The long-running Insidious franchise returned to theaters this weekend with its sixth installment, Insidious: Out of the Further. While the latest chapter didn’t take the top spot at the U.S. box office, it delivered a strong opening for the horror franchise, debuting at #2 behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day.

Insidious: Out of the Further opened to $25.3 million domestically from 3,303 theaters, while its worldwide opening reached $60.3 million.

That puts the new movie somewhere in the middle of the franchise’s previous opening weekends. Here’s how the six films compare:

• Insidious: Chapter 2 (2013) — $40.2 million
• Insidious: Chapter 3 (2015) — $22.6 million
• Insidious: The Last Key (2018) — $29.5 million
• Insidious: The Red Door (2023) — $33 million
• Insidious: Out of the Further (2026) — $25.3 million

The biggest worldwide hit in the franchise remains 2023’s Insidious: The Red Door, which finished its theatrical run with $189 million worldwide. Out of the Further still has plenty of time to chase that number, especially after opening with $60.3 million globally.

The new movie also reportedly carries a relatively modest $18 million production budget, giving Blumhouse and Sony plenty of reason to be happy with its early performance.

If Insidious: Out of the Further continues to pull audiences into theaters, it could once again prove that there’s plenty of life left in The Further. And with the franchise keeping its budgets under control, more trips into the supernatural realm could be on the way.

A previously announced spinoff, Thread: An Insidious Tale, was set to expand the universe with Mandy Moore and Kumail Nanjiani, though there hasn’t been much news on the project in recent years.

Welcome Back to The Further

In Insidious: Out of the Further, The Further begins bleeding into the real world as the demons from the franchise’s past return to haunt a new generation.

Franchise veteran Lin Shaye reprises her iconic role as Elise Rainier, alongside Amelia Eve.

The story follows Gemma, a mother raising her daughter in the home where she grew up. After discovering that she can enter The Further—the purgatorial realm of lost souls at the center of the Insidious universe—Gemma soon realizes she possesses an extraordinary ability.

She doesn’t just travel into The Further. She can bring its inhabitants back with her.

Once the demons discover what Gemma is capable of, the boundary between their world and ours begins to collapse, turning the real world into their new playground.

Jacob Chase (Come Play) writes and directs the sixth installment, with story credit shared with David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick (The Conjuring: Last Rites, Orphan).

Insidious: Out of the Further is now playing in theaters.
